Berzerk Cocktail with NOS Glass

My first memories of Berzerk were at the arcade at Landover Mall in MD.  During the attract mode I heard "Coins detected in pocket" which was very cool because games rarely talked at the time.  The first official talking game was Stratovox but Berzerk was the best known for speech.  I tried it out and remember walking away semi frustrated with the controls.  Eugene Jarvis thought the same when he tried to play Berzerk with a broken arm.  He later developed Robotron with similar control concept but gave the player the ability to shoot and move at the same time using a second joystick.  I really didn't play it again until it showed up at my local neighborhood 7-11 where I found new respect for this classic.  If you didn't already know its the first arcade game to allegedly caused the deaths of 2 kids.  Check out the full story at Killer List of Videogames (KLOV).

My buddy Gordon and I fell in love with Berzerk and played it for hours after school at the 7-11.  Gordon and I at one time had high scores of over 20K which is pretty respectable because the game is tough and potentially deadly.  Gordon eventually bought a Berzerk from a Chucky Cheese that had closed.  We all thought he was so cool because he had his favorite arcade game in his home and we were all only 11 and 12 years old.  He didn't know anyone with a truck so he called a cab and asked for one that was a station wagon.  After being refused by the first cab driver, the second reluctantly drove everyone home including the Berzerk.  Since he didn't have a hand truck, Gordon called me for help.  We carried it from the street and down a grass hill to his apartment.  I thought I was going to have a seizure and throw up moving that beast down the hill by hand.  Berzerk almost claimed the lives of 2 more teenagers but luckily we made it.

Above are a few pictures of my Berzerk Cocktail that I purchased from Jon "Evil Exidy" at Arcade ClassicsJon found new old stock art and glass for the Berzerk at a warehouse and installed it.  Its in really great shape but I might replace the t-molding around the glass and control panel.  Jon had already recapped the monitor which is bright and clear.  The artwork is silk-screened onto the glass and will eventually flake off with time.  Ron at Kineplex recommends using Krylon Triple Thick to seal and protect the artwork.  Luckily the only parts that need to be touched up are all black so no color matching.  This is the Berzerk that is featured on KLOV after submitting pictures.  Click on the Berzerk marquee above to be taken to KLOV.

Trivia

Berzerk received its name from Fred Saberhagen's Berserker series.  Star Trek also was inspired by the series when writing the "Doomsday Machine" episode.  Later Trek publications refer back to the Doomsday Machine as a Berzerker.
